Role summary
Business Development & Operations Lead is responsible for providing overall management and guidance for strategic projects of local Pfizer affiliate, being an owner for high-level leadership meeting organizations, working with enabling and platform function leads to ensure alignment with local and regional goals and coordinate and draft major regional-level briefings/ presentations (e.g. operating plans).
Person on this position will be a key member within the WRD BD Team on global, regional and local levels. She / he will be responsible for building external relationships with potential partners and executing early stage scientific, research, technology and academic transactions for Pfizer. The individual will be part of an experienced BD team which provides support for the Partner Lines, including Medicinal Sciences, Genome Sciences & Technologies, Drug Safety R&D, and additional functions, and other areas that support academic and scientific partnering. This role will be responsible for understanding priorities, aligning with WRD strategy, and partnering closely with Pfizer colleagues responsible for deal sourcing activities in these areas. When early stage transaction opportunities are identified, this individual will lead and support the negotiation and execution of BD transactions.
Role responsibilities
Business Operations
- Provides operational and communications support to the Country Manager and the Leadership Team (CMF) to enhance goal clarity, engagement, and organizational efficiency; ensuring alignment of activities as appropriate
- Manages and tracks commitments made by the Country Manager: executes follow-up activities as appropriate and ensures Leadership Team follow up and implementation
- Lead the Strategic and Operating Planning process by partnering with Finance, making sure environmental, commercial, strategic, functional and financial inputs are addressed
- Design and lead corporate strategic change initiatives across the organization
- Provide periodic business analytics, insights to the leadership team and Country Manager, to have a birds-eye view on areas to penetrate in, and to gauge our presence
- Contribute in all Business Transforming/ Restructuring exercises, leading towards development of future strategies
- Lead the planning and execution of all high-level meetings – leadership, functional, or
commercial, which requires substantial contribution from an operations stand-point, ensuring alignment, consistency, and act as a strong liaison between the Leadership and the organizing teams (e.g. Regional Visits, Annual Sales Conferences, etc.)
Business Development
- Lead and support the execution of technology, early research and discovery BD
transactions, including licensing, option, research collaboration, academic, consortium, and other deals
- Partner with the relevant functional leaders to understand/develop strategies and priorities, ensure communication with and feedback from WRD leaders, provide input from the external landscape, and establish clear goals and priorities for BD opportunities
- Manage and streamline deal governance process and ensure compliance with corporate
procedure; establish process and timelines to manage execution of transactions in a timely manner
- Knowledgeably represent Pfizer in discussions with current and potential partners or other external audiences; demonstrate collaboration, creativity, and responsiveness with all potential partners; maintain, cultivate, and build relationships with companies and broadly within the biopharma community
- Build and manage collaborative relationships across the Pfizer organization and create
internal alignment
- Lead and support initiatives to manage and continually improve the Worldwide Business
Development (WWBD) function and develop its colleagues and culture
Qualifications
- Preference for advanced science/medical degree, legal degree and/or MBA/equivalent;
bachelor’s degree required
- Prior experience working closely with, advising, and presenting to senior leaders on
business development and/or strategy at least for 2-years
- Minimum of 6+ years related business experience, including experience leading and/or
significantly contributing to collaboration, licensing, partnership, M&A, or other relevant
transactions
- Prior experience presenting the business and scientific case of biopharma deal
opportunities to cross-functional leaders
- Innovative, independent, clear, and critical thinker; highly resourceful; creative problem
solving skills
- Strong relationship building skills
- Strong negotiation capabilities, including the ability to independently draft business
agreements preferred; ability to persuade/influence and effectively gain agreement/consensus
- Strong understanding of intellectual property based transactions in the pharmaceutical industry preferred
- Strong and effective verbal and written communication capabilities
- Demonstrated ability to deliver quality results within tight time constraints
- Experience in drug development technologies (from target inception to drug approval) with a focus towards early drug development, medicinal chemistry, manufacturing, drug safety, novel technology development is preferred
